Learning to use Msconfig. Setting up and using msconfig What is windows 7 system configuration

Good day, dear readers of my blog.

Each PC or laptop, in addition to the software installed by the user, also has built-in software. There are often situations when, for some reason, the client needs to configure the operation of the device. For this, the developers at Microsoft have provided a useful and convenient utility MSConfig Windows 7.

The program is a powerful tool that allows you to debug autorun in detail and remove some errors that interfere with the correct operation of the system.

Application "" has ample opportunities in the segment of customizing a personal computer or laptop. For convenient use, the developer has divided the working window into several key tabs.

Important! Do not disable / enable options if you are not sure of what you are doing.

This tool is intended for detailed system configuration. In most cases, this is done to speed up its work.

Tabs( )

As mentioned above, the window is divided into several segments:

After you change something, you need to confirm your actions with the button " Ok". And for the changes to take effect, you need to reboot, which immediately after the shutdown will be notified by the system itself. For convenience, the restart can be postponed.

Launching System Configuration( )

So how do we enter the tool we need? There are several different options to see the desired menu.

We go to " Start"And enter" "in the search bar. We are waiting for the results to appear and choose the appropriate application. It usually occurs alone. How do I open the program? Just click on the icon with the left mouse button.

We also go to the menu “ Start"And then select" All programs". We go to the catalog " Service" and " Standard". We need “ Command line ».

A new window will open where you need to enter "", and then confirm by clicking " Enter».

We go all in the same " Start"To the command" Execute". To do this, you can also press the combination " Win + R».

A small window will appear where we enter "", and then confirm our actions.

It must be said right away that this method is the longest. Almost nobody uses it. But in any case, you should know about it. So where is the required program located? We need to open “ A computer", System drive, go to" Windows"And then go to" ". Here we are looking for the application "". It starts with a simple double click of the mouse.

Sometimes one of the nodes of the path can be hidden and simply not visible. To restore you need to click " View», « Options»And on the second tab remove the necessary checkboxes at the end of the list.

The program does not work( )

Some users may encounter a situation when the required utility does not start. In this case, a message appears stating that the required file is simply missing at the specified address.

In most cases, this happens as a result of a virus entering the computer, which simply removes the application. What to do?

First, we check the system good antivirus with new bases. Otherwise, the rest simply can not be done.

Next, we see if a suitable file even exists in its usual place. If it is not there, we try to copy the item from the same operating system installed on another PC. It is also extracted from the disk that contains the OS image.

To do this, run " Execute" by using " Win + R"Or in any other way. In the window that opens, write the following:

Expand "image location" \ i386 \ MSCONFIG.EX_C: \ Windows \ system32 \ msconfig.exe, and confirm our intentions. Wherein " image location"- the letter of the drive where the system files are located or the path to them (if located directly on the computer).

There is also an option to simply download “ msconfing.exe»From the Internet and place this file in a folder located along the path I mentioned earlier.

Of course, complete reinstalling windows... It will also speed up your computer as a whole. But not everyone can do it on their own or they just don't want to.

Sometimes, for some reason, the required component of the system does not start due to restriction of access rights. To check, we try to open the program with Administrator rights. This usually helps.

In addition, we try to run the application in "". To do this, reboot and press " F8". Then we select the appropriate item.

Further, it is advisable to check “ Registry editor". To do this, go to " Execute"And prescribe" regedit". Then we go to “ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE", Folder" ". Then we go to " Microsoft», « Windows», « CurrentVersion" and " AppPaths". We are interested in the msconfig file with the extension * .exe... Or rather, just its presence. In addition, the REG_SZ value should be as follows: C: \ Windows \ system32 \ msconfig.exe... If there is no this line or even a corresponding mark, all this needs to be created.

You also need to see if the corresponding service is running. To do this, through “ Start"We get into" Control Panel"And then to" Administration". There we go to " Services", Where we are interested in the string" ". If it doesn't work, you need to start it.

In addition, there is a mechanism for checking the system files of the operating system. To do this, go to “ Execute”(We already know how this can be done). In the window that opens, write " sfc / scannow". We confirm our intentions. Should open Protection Windows files ", Which will be accompanied by the message" Checking in progress ...". If the tool is able to determine that the files have changed, it will inform you about this and offer to restore everything to the original version using the installation disc.

Customization( )

If the system component is working correctly or you have corrected possible errors, you can start using it directly. How to properly configure the operation of the operating system using this tool? It all depends on what components a particular user uses.

If we talk about what can be disabled in msconfig in general, you can find out from what I wrote earlier. In particular, it says about the tab “ Services».

At the same time, if you turn off all the components that are described above, and also clean the "" section as much as possible, you can even reach the maximum performance of your equipment. At the same time, it is imperative to remember that any systemic changes usually lead to consequences. So, if you are not sure of the correctness of your actions, you should not change something.

Well, it turns out the MSConfig tool is a useful element of the system. If you use it correctly, you can significantly increase the speed of your device. In this case, incorrect handling can damage the system.

Hope this article helps you. Subscribe and tell your friends about my blog.

Windows 7 msconfig utility - how to enter this operating system as well as Windows 8.10?

Msconfig is a utility whose main purpose is to configure the startup of the Windows operating system of various versions. The functionality of the msconfig utility in question allows you to perform repairs and current adjustment of the operation of various operating systems with high efficiency - Windows 7/8/10. Moreover, this program allows you to independently set startup criteria, test the functioning of system services and applications, and fully administer your PC.

Another important point is that the msconfig utility can be launched without any problems using a variety of methods - the simplest and most convenient of them are described above. So the msconfig application can be safely called a convenient and useful tool "in the hands" of a competent user. If you are still not familiar with this utility, then learning to work with it is quite simple - this will allow you to solve many questions. Moreover, in the proposed article all the points that you need to know when working with the msconfig utility are analyzed in detail - by paying attention to the screenshots and strictly following the recommendations, you can deal with this program in a short time.

System configuration (aka msconfig) is a built-in utility that is designed to manage autorunable applications (that is, those programs that are automatically loaded immediately after the operating system boots). This system component existed in all versions of Windows (except Windows 2000), starting with Windows 98.

  • selection of the launch mode;
  • setting boot parameters;
  • enabling and disabling system services;
  • management of startup programs;
  • setting up additional system utilities.

We will consider these possibilities a little later, but first we will tell you about several ways to start the system configuration.

The context menu "Start" has such a useful function as search. With the help of search, you can easily find almost any program if you enter your query correctly. And the system configuration in this case, too, was no exception - it is easily searchable. To implement this feature, do the following:

On a note! It is important here not to confuse the system configuration with other files that the search result brought up - the configuration will be displayed in the list "Programs", but not "Files" .

Method number 2. Run window

Another easy way to start the system configuration is the Run command. With this command, you can open almost all important system programs, and this is done in literally two clicks. The only problem is that not all users of the Windows operating system know these commands, especially when it comes to beginners. So, to run the msconfig utility, follow the further instructions:

Method number 3. Command line

The command line is the shell for the entire operating system. With its help, you can carry out many operations, including those that cannot be carried out by the standard Windows graphical interface. However, there is the same problem as in the previous case - the banal ignorance of an ordinary user. Therefore, we will try to correct the situation a little by talking about how to start the "System Configuration" through the command line. To do this, follow the further step-by-step instructions:

  1. Open the menu "Start"(in the first method, this process is described in more detail) and click on "All programs".

  2. Find the folder in the list of programs "Standard" and open it.

  3. A list of standard programs will open. You need to find "Command Line" among them and start it with a left mouse click.

  4. In the window that opens, enter a simple command « msconfig» ... Click on "Enter" to have the console run the command.

  5. The system configuration menu will then appear. Mission accomplished.

Method number 4. Administration

Windows has a special system folder called "Administrative Tools". This folder contains a number of tools for managing your computer: print management, job scheduler, system monitor, and many more. All of these tools also include System Configuration, which can be launched directly from the Administration folder. To do this, follow these steps:

Method number 5. Opening a file in "System32"

"System32" is one of the important system folders of the Windows operating system, which ensures its correct and full-fledged operation, and which under no circumstances should be deleted. This folder contains the most important system files, including the Windows configuration file. To open this file, do everything as described in the instructions below:

  1. Open the explorer by double-clicking the left mouse button on the shortcut "A computer" which is on the desktop.

  2. Please select « Local disk(C :) ", open it double click mice .

  3. Go to system folder Windows.

  4. In the large list of folders, find "System32" and open it with a double click.

  5. This folder contains a huge variety of different files and folders. You need to find among them the file "Msconfig.exe" and run it with a double click. To make it easier to find, sort the files alphabetically by clicking on "Name" above.

Create shortcut

If you constantly feel the need for system configuration settings, you can go to the corresponding menu directly from your desktop. This will save you time by eliminating the need to carry out one of the manipulations described in the methods above. This is done quite simply - follow the further step-by-step instructions.

First, select the directory where you want to place the configuration shortcut. In this example, this is the desktop, but you can do it in any other folder convenient for you (except for some folders on the system drive C).

Configuration settings

The system configuration menu contains several tabs with settings. We will tell you about these settings in the next part of the article. Having dealt with these settings, you can easily customize the configuration to suit your needs. Let's take a closer look at each of the tabs.

General

This tab contains settings for loading the operating system. It offers the user the following modes:

  • normal launch... Here everything can be understood by the name - this is the usual boot mode of Windows OS. It includes loading all startup items, drivers, system services, and so on. Your OS by default always starts in this mode, if you have not changed anything in the settings;

  • diagnostic run... This startup mode is mostly used for system testing and troubleshooting purposes. It often happens that some programs lead to malfunctions in the system and prevent it from fully functioning (or even may lead to the inability of the OS to boot). Only the most important services and system components are loaded in diagnostic startup mode. In this mode, it is best to clean your computer from various malicious programs;

  • selective launch... This mode serves for a more detailed study of the problems that have arisen in the system. Basically, a diagnostic run is a selective run that does not have a single check mark. In this mode, you can choose which elements to download and which not. For a more accurate diagnosis, it is recommended to turn on the elements one by one, until that system problem arises that bothers you in normal mode. This will help you determine which of the startup services contains the problem, and it will help you get closer to solving it.

After selecting the mode you want, press Apply... After the first reboot, your computer will boot in the selected mode.

If more than one is installed on your computer, then you can configure the boot order in this tab. Also "Download" provides the user with the ability to set additional download parameters.

This menu has the following options that can be activated with a checkmark:

  • "Safe mode"... By activating safe mode, you start your OS with limited capabilities, which is useful for diagnosing system errors;
  • "Without GUI"... Enabling this option will reduce the time it takes to boot the system when you turn on the computer, as it will disable the boot animation. Windows is designed in such a way that until the animation is fully played, it will not load, even if all drivers and system services have already been loaded;
  • "Boot log"... This parameter allows you to create a special text file, which will display information about the order of the loaded drivers during system boot after turning on the computer;
  • "Basic video"... Enabling this option will replace the discrete graphics card drivers with the standard VGA driver;
  • "OS Information"... If you turn on this mode, during the next start-up Windows boot will be able to see information about the loaded drivers.

Services

This tab lists all system services that are enabled after the system boots. The settings provided in this tab can also be used for diagnostic purposes without resorting to activating the security mode.

For example, if an error occurs, you can turn off the services one by one until it disappears. This will help you find out which system service is causing the problem. To deactivate a service:

Probably, everyone at least once faced an unpleasant situation when you download an application, and it starts constantly downloading when you turn on the computer, slowing down the download in general. This happens due to the fact that some applications are written into the. In this tab, you can enable or disable such applications by placing checkboxes.

Service

This section is intended for downloading additional utilities. If you don’t know what function they have, you can see the short description on the right. To run the required utility, select it with a left click and press "Launch"... Restarting the computer, as in the previous cases, is not necessary here.

Conclusion

System configuration is one of the most important Windows components... Therefore, it will be useful for everyone to know how to start and configure it. At some point, this knowledge can help you troubleshoot a complex system error.

Video - How to open msconfig Windows 7, Windows 10

Windows operating systems have several built-in utilities that allow you to fine-tune it and thereby facilitate the user's work. The advantage of using them in several ways of launching, the possibility of optimizing the operation of the system, the relative safety of the user. One of these utilities is msconfig, which is an integral part of all modern Windows-based operating systems.

How do I run the msconfig utility?

The msconfig tool is a system utility that is used to change the configuration of a system. Before you understand in detail how to use msconfig correctly, you need to familiarize yourself with all the options for starting this program. After all, if you do not learn how to call the assistant, you will not be able to change the settings with his help.

Method number 1

The most popular method to launch the utility is to use the "" menu. This option can be used on any version of the operating system. For it, you just need to expand the "Start" menu and enter its msconfig in the search bar. Then press Enter. There will be only one option in the search results, entitled "System Configuration". Click on this cell to run the tool.

Method number 2

There is another simple option for msconfig Wi ndows 10, how to enter this program. You just need to follow the instructions:

  • go to "Start" and use the search bar to find the Command Prompt;
  • run it as administrator using the right mouse button;
  • you will see a window in which you need to register msconfig;
  • press Enter and msconfig download will start.

The system configuration window will open in front of you, close the Command Prompt and work with it directly. This launch option can be used in all versions of operating systems, not just in the tenth modification.

Method number 3

The next option is similar to the previous one, but you need to enter the msconfig command in the "Run" window. It can be found in the list of utilities in the Start menu or opened with the Win + R hotkeys. This combination works on all OS versions.

Method number 4

AND last way for msconfig Windows 7, how to enter this program - use "Explorer" and the system folder in it. To use it, use the instructions:

  • open explorer and enter C: \ Windows \ System32 in the address bar;
  • in this folder you will find many files, including special utilities and other tools for the system's performance;
  • you need to find msconfig.exe in the middle of the list;
  • double click on this file to run.

This method is quite difficult for beginners, but it works on all OS versions, starting from XP. The main problem is that you have to scroll through a long list of files and it is difficult to find the right one among them - there are many similar names.

How can msconfig be used?

After you have launched the utility to configure the system configuration, you need to understand what modes it works in and what msconfig gives. Experienced users use this tool to perform various tasks, let's talk about the main ones.

System testing

This feature helps you find out how the application will behave with certain resources. Here are some examples:

  1. Let's say you have a quad-core processor on your computer, and you want to test the operation of applications with two active cores.
  2. Also, using this feature, you can simulate the operation of programs with a smaller volume random access memory.

Ordinary users do not need these capabilities, since they rarely simulate such situations. It is useful for developers and those who are modifying their computer or want to see how the program will behave on a weak machine.

Finding problems and debugging them

This is a more useful feature as it is used when there is a problem with the machine. It should be used when the following symptoms appear:

  • system errors (spontaneous reboot, blue screen and others);
  • malfunctions of programs;
  • braking and frequent freezing.

The problem may appear due to the hardware or the operating system itself. Unlike third-party programs, you do not need to download msconfig, it is already built in by the developers in all versions of the operating system, starting with XP.

If you want to check Windows, then you need to open the General tab in the configurator and boot in diagnostic mode (it supports basic drivers and runs system services). Then you need to use the computer as usual, trying to create a situation in which the operating system malfunctions.

If problems persist in this mode, it means there are problems with drivers or system files. If the problem was not found, then it is worth looking for the cause of the malfunction in system services. In this case, you need to go to the service tab and do the following:

  • Leave all Microsoft services enabled;
  • disable and enable all other processes one at a time;
  • after activating each of the services, you need to reboot.

By checking in this way, you will find the process that is guilty of computer problems. If this test option has not yielded results, then you need to enable autoloading and add applications to it one by one. This way you can find the program responsible for the problems with your computer use.

With regard to autoloading, all applications contained in it must be known and regularly used. The smaller the list, the better. Don't add anything you don't use to the startup list.

Preventive work

This feature of msconfig W indows 10 (and in other OS versions) is to monitor the processes that are consuming your computer's resources. Users should check the Services and Startup tabs frequently to ensure that no extraneous applications appear in them. It is especially important to carry out preventive measures for those who regularly install third-party software in the PC memory. System optimization and preventive maintenance operations should be carried out regularly so that you do not have to reinstall the OS soon.

What system settings can be changed using msconfig?

Now let's look at the tabs that are available in the System Configuration tool. The program itself is a small window with five tabs. Each of them has its own practical application. Let's consider msconfig, how to properly configure the system parameters for stable operation.

General Tab

In this tab, you can switch to a special startup mode of the operating system. It is used to find problems with the operation of the operating system. Consider when to use each of the options:

  1. Normal - used for standard work with a computer, by default. This option loads all drivers, system services and programs from the startup list.
  2. Diagnostic - used to check the system, in this mode only basic system services and drivers necessary for functioning are started.
  3. Custom - In this mode, you can tell the system which options to run. To do this, you just need to place markers next to the lines you need. If you change anything in the Load tab, a marker next to the Use original configuration line will become active so you can revert to the original settings.

It is best to use only normal and diagnostic (as needed) modes. With selective, you will be able to remove markers next to the main services, which will disrupt the system and lead to errors.

Download tab

This tab allows you to fine-tune the system boot. It is useful in cases where you have multiple skins installed and you need to choose the one that will work by default. Also, this tab helps in cases where you need to start the OS in safe mode or test its operation with other hardware configurations.

In the first option, under the window with the list of operating systems, you need to set the marker next to the line "Safe mode" and select additional boot options (for example, support for the network or other shells). If testing is required, you need to click on the "Advanced parameters" button and set the number of processors or the amount of RAM. Do not touch the PCI lock and debug items, they are for developers. It is better not to touch these parameters unnecessarily.

Also in the main window of this tab you can: set a timeout during which the list of available operating systems will be displayed; remove the logo from the loading screen using "no GUI". In the lower right corner, you can make the boot parameters you specified permanent by placing a marker next to the corresponding line.

Services Tab

In this tab, in order not to damage the system, you must immediately set the marker next to the line "Do not display Microsoft services." At the same time, the list of active services will be reduced to a minimum. You will only have to analyze it and remove markers next to unnecessary processes activated by third-party programs that you do not use. Services for updating applications and others may appear here. It is not necessary to remove only the processes associated with antivirus utilities.

In this msconfig tab, the setting will allow you to speed up the loading of the operating system. To do this, you need to exclude from startup all applications that you do not use (by removing the markers next to them). Developers often add the ability to run hidden in a variety of programs, which loads the operating system at startup. Only the components responsible for sound, graphics and modem operation (if you use a special application to establish a connection) should be left in startup.

Service Tab

This is a sub-tab that contains links to tools for system administration. With its help, you can run utilities to manage the OS. To do this, just select the auxiliary program and click on the "Start" button. A short description is indicated next to the name of the program.

This is the only tab, when you use it, you will not see a window for rebooting the system. In other cases, after adjusting the settings, you will see a dialog asking you to restart for the changes to take effect.

What should I do if the system stops working stably after changing msconfig settings?

Most often, changing the settings leads to the fact that operating system stops loading and shuts down spontaneously. Most often, this result can be achieved by changing the configuration of the use of kernels and RAM in the "Load" tab. Most often, they try to do this to overclock the computer, but in reality everything turns out differently.

If you are faced with such a problem, then you need to start the system. If it does not start in normal mode, then in the start menu select the secure boot option with command line support. Run Command Prompt (in the tenth version of the OS as administrator), and then do the following:

  • type bcdedit / deletevalue (default) numproc and press Enter on the keyboard;
  • then enter the second command bcdedit / deletevalue (default) truncatememory and confirm with Enter again.

In case of problems with booting the system, you can call the start menu with the F 8 button, this key will help you in cases when the OS does not boot, and you cannot get into its startup menu in other ways.

Now you know what msconfig can configure. Without special need, you should not change the system start options. For inexperienced users, it is best to limit themselves to checking the startup and running services. If you still have questions, you can ask them in the comments. Share this article with your friends so that they too can change the system settings and keep it working.

Especially the owners of budget equipment and people who use resource-intensive programs on an ongoing basis. To do this, download applications that, with varying degrees of success, affect the OS and allow it to be controlled. However, not everyone knows that Windows itself has a very effective utility that offers fine-tuning - System Configuration or by the name of the command that runs it: msconfig. In this article, we will tell you in detail about the purpose, capabilities and correct setting this useful module.

Running and configuring in Windows msconfig.

"System configuration", activated by the msconfig command, is a module using which you can configure your PC as conveniently as possible. The utility window is divided into sections, each of them has tools of different directions:

  1. "General" - here you can choose between normal or limited system startup.
  2. "Boot" - here you can choose how long the system should take to boot, configure "Safe Mode" for specific purposes: recovery, entering another shell, etc.
  3. "Services" - here you can select the services that will start immediately after the computer is turned on. To quickly find the ones you need, there is a function to ignore system processes - only a user-defined list will come out.
  4. "Startup" is actually the flagship function of the utility: it is used most often. Here they remove and add programs that run along with the system.
  5. "Service" - contains several useful options: you can quickly view the main parameters and presets of the system, check for errors.

Any parameters must be changed with caution, clearly understanding what the result will be in order not to harm the computer.

How to enter the msconfig.exe configurator

Now let's talk about the msconfig service in different versions of Windows (XP, 7, 8, 10): how to enter the "System Configuration" window in one way or another.

Search line"

How to enter System Configuration (msconfig) quickly and easily:

  1. If you have "Windows" XP or 7, open "Start", below find the line to search for programs and enter either "System Configuration" or "msconfig" there, and then open the utility by double clicking.
  2. If you have "Windows" 8-10, then "Search" is rendered by a separate button next to "Start". Write the same thing in there.

If you have an unlicensed Windows with a bad English-Russian translation, and it does not understand the requests, you will have to look for the file in the root directory. To do this, you need to open "Disk C" and Windows folder, and in it - System32. There you will find the msconfig.exe element - it can be launched by double clicking, the file location does not change depending on "Windows".

Run command

Also on Windows 7, 8, 10 msconfig can be enabled by calling the Run window:

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. In the line that appears, enter the command and confirm the action with the "Enter" button.

If it does not work, and the system displays a message that you do not have enough rights, it is better to find the "Run" application through the system search, and then right-click on it and select Run As Administrator, and only then set the command.

Command line

Command line request is also simple and effective method calling the desired service when it is problematic to open msconfig in Windows 8 or 10 using other methods.

  1. Type in the "Search" the phrase: "Command line" and click on the name of the program with the additional button of the manipulator to select Run As Administrator.
  2. A window with a black field will appear in front of you.
  3. Immediately under the blinking cursor type: "msconfig" and press "Enter".

How to configure msconfig correctly

Now let's talk about setting up a PC in the "System Configuration". Above, a brief reference to the main sections has already been given, and now let's talk in more detail about the functions that it is better not to use if you are not a professional.

What gives "Number of processors" in msconfig

This section specifies how many cores the PC will start at startup. By default, everything that is in the processor is listed (it does not matter what kind of Windows you have: XP, 7, 8 or 10), and this is aimed at maximum performance. You can only change the number downwards, which does not make sense for regular user... This option can be useful for computer testers to configure it correctly.

What gives "Maximum memory" in msconfig

The same thing happens with the "Maximum memory" function: the performance, depending on the RAM, is set to the limits of the possible by default (again, this parameter does not depend on the Windows version: XP, 7, 8 or 10) and is focused on maximum performance. You cannot make the indicator even higher - you only have access to a decrease in performance, which is completely unnecessary for normal work on a PC. Sometimes msconfig will not start: this can happen due to system failures. In this case, you can check the status of the files: call the Command line and ask for "sfc / scannow" (without quotes) + "Enter". You can also go to the registry editor:

  1. Press Win + R, in the line "Run" enter "regedit" (without quotes).
  2. Click "Enter".
  3. In the list on the left, find the large HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE section and find the SOFTWARE folder.
  4. In it, you need to sequentially open the Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ App Paths folders to get to the MSCONFIG.EXE file.
  5. The location address of this item must be like this: system_drive \ WINDOWS \ PCHealth \ HelpCtr \ Binaries \ MSConfig.exe. If not, you need to exit the registry, move the file where necessary, and then specify the correct path in the registry itself.
  6. Now in the same folder find the HELPCTR.EXE file and check its address, it should correspond to: C: \ WINDOWS \ PCHealth \ HelpCtr \ Binaries \ HelpCtr.exe.
