Starting on 08/02/2016, many desktop and mobile users began to receive (or should have received) offers to install Windows 10 Anniversary Update (Redstone). How to upgrade to a new build, if for some reason such a proposal from the developer has not been received, now we will consider. To get an update, if it is really needed or is due in its installation, you can use several simple methods, which will be discussed in the following description.
Judging by the new modification based on the materials presented on the official resource of the developer corporation, there are a lot of changes in the system. However, this update was only at first called Redstone, and now the update is designated exclusively by technical means in the form of version and build.
Update 1607 (build version 14393.10) is currently available. We will now consider how to install the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, especially since at least five simplest methods are provided for this. Let's take a closer look at possible problems.
But what's new in the new build? The main aspects of the innovations were increased intelligence of the Cortana assistant, improved interaction with Android and Windows Phone devices, support for Edge browser extensions, the introduction of ubiquitous biometric site authentication, a new system for unlocking a computer system using a companion device, an improvement in Windows Ink technology for using handwriting typing with a stylus, returning to the full-featured Skype application, the appearance of the Linux command line, using updated power plans, etc. But the very first thing that is immediately visible to the naked eye is a redesigned black interface, an expanded Start menu and Center notifications." Also, some changes have affected the "Taskbar".
But for now, let's focus on exactly how to install the Anniversary Update for Windows 10.

They are quite simple. But for now, let's focus on stationary systems, not taking into account the Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update. How to upgrade to a new system modification on mobile devices will be considered separately. And now - a few solutions regarding computers and laptops.
As for the renewal methods themselves, presented above, they all imply only the use of different means to achieve identical goals. As already clear, user data is not affected, and only system components are subject to change (update).
As it turns out, sometimes the situation with updates gets out of control. Problems can begin during the installation of the update, and at later stages, after it is fully installed. If the user has some specialized programs, it is better to solve the installation issue with technical specialists, because today there are quite a few cases when user applications stop working (it will be quite problematic to return to the original state). But more on that later.
So, let's start with the simplest. Based on what was stated by Microsoft representatives, absolutely all users of the tenth version of the system on computers or mobile devices will receive a special notification in due time that update 1607 is currently available to them.
This is somewhat reminiscent of the situation with the modification of the Technical Preview, when a registered user submitted an application and waited in line. If you have time to wait, you can not rush. Anyway, sooner or later such a message will appear. The main condition for installation is the availability of uninterrupted communication and access to the Internet. If the user agrees to the installation, the entire process will take place completely automatically.
But there is also such a category of users who do not want to wait. For them, in the simplest version, the question of how to force an update to the Anniversary Update can be resolved by using the usual manual search for updates in the Update Center.
To do this, go to the section itself and use the appropriate button. Upon completion of the check, it is possible that a link to install build 1607 will appear in the results. If the update is found, a short message will appear on the screen, after which the package will be downloaded, prepared for the update and installed after confirming the system reboot (there may be several reboots).
When the update is installed, the version can be checked via the command line by typing winver in it (the console should be launched as an administrator).
However, don't count on it too much. How to get the Windows 10 Anniversary Update if the search returns nothing? Easy peasy. To get started, you can use the well-known Media Creation Tool utility, which was originally used to force the installation of the Technical Preview version.
So, we need to install Windows 10 Anniversary Update. How to update using this utility? Yes, exactly the same as the initial assembly was installed.
We launch the utility with administrator rights, after which we agree with the license and choose to update the computer (in this case to Windows 10 Pro) while saving user data. This is followed by a standard process, during which the system can be rebooted several times.
If the user does not like the above method or, even worse, errors and crashes occur, you can try to use a small Windows 10 Upgrade utility, which is downloaded from the official Microsoft website by clicking the update button and downloading the Windows10Upgrade9252.exe executable file to your computer.
How to upgrade to Windows 10 Anniversary Update using it? There is nothing complicated either. It works in the same way as the previous program. We launch the "executable" file on behalf of the administrator, wait for the results of the system compatibility check, follow the instructions of the installer and wait for the installation process to complete.
There is another technique that allows you to quite simply solve the issue of installing the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. How to upgrade? Yes, just use a ready-made system image that you need to create in the Media Creation Tool application, specifying the appropriate item at the installation stage.
When the image is created, in the usual "Explorer" you should double-click on it, and after creating the virtual drive, use the standard Setup.exe installation file. This is followed by the standard scheme described above. You can download a ready-made image from the Internet (if you want, even from the official resource).
Finally, let's take a look at the mobile version of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. How to upgrade to this modification on a mobile device?
Unfortunately, in this case, the choice of means in comparison with stationary systems is extremely limited. Here it is best to use a manual search for available updates.
You can make it directly on your mobile device. First, you should enter the settings section, where the update and security menu is selected, after which the phone update item is used, and then the search button for available updates is pressed.
Immediately, you should pay attention to one more side of the installation of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update package. It’s already clear how to update, but the main problem is that users who are not tied to mobile operators are the first to receive a new assembly. As stated, the operator versions will become available a little later.
On this question, how to upgrade to Windows 10 of a new modification, we will leave aside. Consider possible problems that may arise during the update process.
As usual, the Update Center itself may also fail. It may very well be that first he will have to apply methods to eliminate his own mistakes. Also, problems can be observed if the special utilities described above are used, but for some reason the download of the package was interrupted or not completed. In addition, although it is claimed that the system requirements for computers have remained unchanged, it is hard to believe in this. Therefore, it is better to install update 1607 into the system not with the minimum working configuration, but at least with the recommended one, and even better - with the configuration above. But even all this does not guarantee that the computer will work normally, because after installing this update, the system often freezes completely. What this is connected with, so far no one can really explain.
Finally, one cannot ignore the problems of functioning of user applications that were installed in the old modification. Today, user reviews say that some of them simply stop working, program executable files are spontaneously renamed, the system does not recognize programs and their startup files, believing that they are not intended for this particular modification. Therefore, you need to be 100% sure that the new build is extremely necessary for the user and will not damage the installed software. By the way, a similar situation was observed with the primary technical version, however, then it concerned more free antiviruses and various optimizers.
In general, as can be seen from all of the above, the problem of updating to a new anniversary modification of the system is not too difficult. What to use as a means of updating, everyone decides for himself. However, if you approach the update from the point of view of maximum security and an accelerated procedure, it is best to turn to the help of special utilities, especially since these are official programs that will certainly not harm the system. And, of course, you should pay special attention to the hardware installed on the computer, because, unfortunately, there is no guarantee that the new modification will work on it as expected.
Well, in the situation with mobile devices, the choice is small. The only consolation is that an available update on mobile devices during manual search is determined much more often than on desktop computers or laptops. But even here there are pitfalls. First, on the official website, you need to look at the list of devices that will support the new modification without any questions. If the user gadget is not in the list, you will have to install the update at your own peril and risk. Again, there is no guarantee that the system will work. And in the case of installing custom firmware, it generally cannot be for all security reasons. So think a hundred times before doing such things.
And one moment. It should be understood that updating the graphical interface and allegedly improving some system capabilities ultimately leads to the fact that system resources will be used to a greater extent (user settings for some components may not be saved). You will have to reconfigure the system for yourself, turning off everything unnecessary. So judge, do you need the features offered by the new modification? The same Cortana assistant in the post-Soviet space is not available at all. So what's the point of installing its new functions if this component is not in the system initially?

Connections are established with other people and organizations (including by address book and call log), approximate (according to cellular networks and Wi-Fi access points) and exact (according to signals from satellite navigation systems) current location, all registered movements in the past and more.
Last year, Roskomnadzor checked the compliance of this practice of collecting data about Windows 10 users with the requirements of the Russian law “On Information, Information Technologies and Information Protection”. The department's official response states that Microsoft's activities regarding the operation of its new operating system do not fall under this law at all. It is believed that users themselves allow the collection of the listed data by accepting the license agreement and related documents. “This agreement, in accordance with the Civil Code, is a public offer. In general, the established practice of voluntarily-compulsorily transferring people to Windows 10 is, in my opinion, more of a public scam than an offer.

With it, you can feel augmented without the use of tags, cameras, smartphones, and even without connecting to a desktop. Like last time, we performed a clean install of Windows 10 Pro (32-bit, v. 1607 build 14393.51) and began to study its behavior. We were helped to spy on the spy by the same programs that were already used for. These are the Wireshark sniffer, Fiddler HTTP proxy, TCPView network connection monitor and various auxiliary utilities that do not require installation.
Fiddler installs like a normal application. Wireshark is available as a portable build, but requires the installation of the WinPcap library to run. It works as a link layer driver and allows you to intercept network packets bypassing the protocol stack. Therefore, we left Fiddler and Wireshark for the last part of the experiment. Network traffic was analyzed first with monitoring components completely disabled, and then in the recommended Windows 10 settings.
It is curious that still not all monitoring functions can be disabled during installation. After it, we additionally closed access to the camera, microphone, radio modules in the control panel, blocked access to contacts, calendar, call log, email, SMS and MMS, notifications, account information, and also prohibited interaction with applications on other devices and receive information in the background.
Of course, some of these features make it easier to use Windows 10 in everyday life, but at this stage, we were interested in the purity of the experiment and the very ability to ensure privacy with standard tools. About a year after the release of the final version of Windows 10, Microsoft has prepared a major update for its current OS, which will be released under the name Anniversary. The completion of work on it was preceded by more than two dozen test assemblies, which is a kind of record. Distribution of this update among users will begin in early August. The first thing a user will notice after installing the Windows 10 Anniversary Update is the updated lock screens and welcome screens. The Edge browser, which replaced Internet Explorer last year, has become one of those system components that Microsoft paid the most attention to in the anniversary update. Recall that Edge debuted in Windows 10 and is currently exclusive to the desktop and mobile versions of this OS. The web browser runs on a lighter and improved version of the Internet Explorer engine and differs from it in a noticeably lighter interface.
On the other hand, the new browser was, unfortunately, light in terms of the number of available settings, initially not offering the user even a few very basic options that any web surfing program has. With the arrival of the Anniversary Update, Microsoft seems to have closed many of these customization and functionality gaps. However, let's go in order.
Two new items appeared in the main menu of the program:
The item "New features and tips" leads to a page with a list of innovations that has not yet been localized. But the “extensions” section is many times more interesting, since this, in fact, is the main innovation in the browser.
Extensions created by third-party developers have been in competing products for a long time and allow you to supplement the functionality and individual features of web browsers to your taste. With the advent of the Anniversary Update, the extension system and its catalog for them first appear in the Microsoft browser.
The only thing that confused us was that the extensions are tied to the Windows Store and without logging into your account, even something that is free will not be allowed to download.
So far, Edge has very few extensions compared to its competitors. However, the modules most demanded by users, such as the AdBlock banner cutter, are already here.
This catalog will, of course, expand over time.
However, in addition to the extensions in the updated Edge, there is something to see. For example, the ability to pin tabs, known to users of all alternative browsers, has appeared, reducing them in size, protecting them from accidental closing:
In the context menu of the address bar, the “paste and search” command is available, which, if not just text, but a link is copied to the clipboard, automatically changes to “paste and go”:

The work of the favorites panel has been significantly improved. There you can now create folders, rename items and enable the display of icons only. None of this has happened before:

Several new Edge features are related to the download mechanism. In addition to the integration with the notification center mentioned above, Edge no longer starts downloading immediately, but first asks the user what he wants to do with the downloaded file: save to the default folder, save to the selected directory, or not start downloading at all:
In this pop-up panel, by the way, the file size is also displayed. In the settings, you can return the previous behavior of the browser when it immediately started loading. There, finally, an option appeared that allows you to set the default download directory:
Edge now warns if you try to exit it without completing one or more downloads:
An interesting option has been added to the settings section responsible for cleaning the browser, which allows you to automatically delete selected items every time you exit Edge:
The representation of the favorites has noticeably changed. It used to look like this:
You could only see the contents of one directory at a time. Now favorites are displayed in a hierarchical view, where you can see all links, as well as folders and subfolders:
In addition, the “sort by name” item appeared in the context menu of the favorites, and the “delete” item is now moved away from the others by a separator:
Quite a lot in Edge and implicit changes. In particular, the procedure for importing data from other browsers has been improved. Edge has learned to detect secondary flash content on pages, usually banner ads, and automatically pause it. Swipes can move forward and backward through the pages.
Of the little things, we note the use of drop-down lists in the settings, the new icon of the new tab page, as well as items hidden by default in the context menus of web pages intended for developers.
A number of new options have arrived on the about:flags service page, where various experimental browser options are located. However, for the average user there is hardly anything particularly important.
With Windows 10 Anniversary, Microsoft continues to evolve the Settings panel with more and more options. However, the classic control panel still has nowhere to go and a lot of links, including those from the "Parameters", lead to it. In addition to the new settings, the "Settings" of Windows 10 received a number of cosmetic improvements.
For example, the first section “System” looked like this before:
In Windows 10 Anniversary, some changes have been made to the logic of the Options panel. It is especially striking that the names of both new and existing subsections, for clarity, received their own miniature icon on the left:
The same monochrome icons appeared not only next to subsections, but also on some pages. For example, in "sign-in options" next to the name of each of the methods of logging into Windows, a corresponding icon appeared:
Such trifles, obviously, according to the intention of the developers, will make the options more visual and memorable.
Another change is the built-in search. On the main page, it is now centered, and on normal pages it has moved from the right side to the left. But the most important thing here is that the search now does not expand to the entire window by default, as it did before:

In "Personalization" there was a subsection "Taskbar". If you open the context menu of the taskbar and select "Options" there, then now you will fall into this subsection instead of the old window. There are no new options there, in the subsection all the previous settings are only grouped:

The palette, as you can see, has been somewhat redesigned, has become more compact, and the selected color is now marked with a “tick”, instead of a barely noticeable rectangle.
Below are the new options:
First, the title bar color can now be configured separately from the start menu, taskbar, and action center colors. Previously, the color was adjusted simultaneously for four of these elements. Now the color of the windows is rendered separately from the rest.
Secondly, there is an interface mode switch from light (default) style to dark:
However, not everything is perfect with this mode at the moment. Let's start with the fact that only universal applications and the control panel change the color. Regular applications, Explorer, and with it most of the context menus throughout the system remain light.
The Edge browser seems to live separately from the main settings: although the dark style is available there, for some reason you have to turn it on manually separately. Finally, in some places bright inscriptions look too contrasting against a black background.
After playing around with the colors, we went to the "Privacy" section: the settings here have significantly increased in many subsections. Now you can prevent applications from accessing the notification center, the user's location data, and you can also prevent them from managing other applications.
In "Updates and security" in the "Windows Defender" subsection, you can now configure how the defender interacts with the notification center. In addition, there is a new offline scan functionality.
Finally, in the same section, but already in the "Windows Update" subsection, it became possible to set the so-called activity period.
During this period, the system will not automatically reboot the device, even if it makes sure that you do not use it.
It is worth noting that some smaller innovations also debuted in the Options panel. To talk about each of them would mean a completely exorbitant increase in this already rather big article.
Finally, let's take a quick look at those changes that do not affect the Start menu, notification center, browser and Settings panel, that is, are not related to those elements that the corporation has worked on the most.
Let's start with the fact that Microsoft is still quietly engaged in design. Well, or at least what she puts into this word.

With built-in programs in the Anniversary Update, things are inconsistent. Microsoft continues to add and remove universal apps from the system. This time out of favor fell, for example, Finance and Sport. Could not find also Phone and Phone Manager. However, hardly anyone will grieve for them.
Another application that seems to have been removed from the system is Sway, designed to create interactive presentations. On one of the Western sites, it was indicated that it was not actually cut out of the system, but made part of the Photos application, but we did not understand how to access Sway from it. In addition, the photographs themselves, upon a cursory acquaintance, were closed without permission twice.
Old notes were removed from the system and replaced with a universal version of Sticky Notes.
The main new application in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update was the universal version of Skype. The first acquaintance with her, however, turned out to be so-so.
After logging into the Skype account, the program for some reason immediately started up with a dark theme, while the system used a light one.
Going into the settings, it turned out that to change the style of Skype from dark to light, you need to restart the program, and you must restart it manually.
When the universal Skype was launched again, we saw that the settings for it were still with a gulkin's nose. At best, a dozen options are available to the user, and the window with them cannot rationally use the area available to him, which is why even this small number of parameters have to be scrolled.
To be honest, familiarity with universal applications, at least from Microsoft itself, makes one wonder how primitive they are compared to traditional ones. However, here, perhaps, we are mistaken and someone will correct us in the comments.
But back to the review of the remaining innovations in the Anniversary Update. For the taskbar, the option to auto-hide in tablet mode is available, the set of emoticons has been redone, the system search can now search in OneDrive. Handwriting recognition support is available for 23 additional languages. Switching between audio output sources is implemented in the volume setting pop-up interface.
The clock and calendar are now displayed on all monitors when using a multi-monitor configuration. A new combination Win + Alt + D has been added to call their pop-up interface. The system tray calendar is now integrated with the Calendar system application:
Many changes have been made to Cortana. Surprisingly, this assistant still does not support the Russian language, therefore, instead of a detailed identification of innovations, we will only mention its main ones. In particular, the ability to search for music has been improved, the tools for creating reminders have been expanded, and the integration of the voice assistant with the Maps application has been carried out.
Cortana's cross-device interactions have been strengthened, including battery usage information, Find My Phone, and device-to-device transfer of map data.
Finally, work continues to improve the functionality of virtual desktops. You can now switch between them with four-finger gestures on the touchpad. In addition, you can now pin one window or all windows from one application on all virtual desktops at once:
It would seem that the Anniversary update, released a year later and already the second major package of changes, should bring Windows 10, as they say, to mind, finally making the system “licked” and complete. However, in practice this is not the case.
In the top ten, two control panels still coexist, the voice assistant Cortana, which is one of the flagship innovations of the OS, is still not available in Russian, as well as in many other languages. Nothing has changed at the heart of the Windows interface - Explorer, as the corporation is still preparing for its complete redesign in the future. And that's not to mention all sorts of little things like rudiments popping up here and there from Windows 7 and 8.
Thus, if you were waiting for a completely finished, honed to the smallest detail system, then, as it seems to us, Windows 10 is not yet one. Congratulations to users who have been successfully using the "ten" since last year: with the advent of the Anniversary Update, they are turning from alpha testers to beta testers).

On the other hand, in the Anniversary Update, the Start menu, virtual desktops, and notification center are getting more usable. Edge for some will become a real workhorse with extensions and basic features that were not there before. The "Parameters" panel continues its evolution, preparing to finally become a single system control center. The mess with communication apps seems to be ending with the advent of the new Skype.
As a result, the anniversary update is, without a doubt, a step in the right direction. That's just to win over to the side of Windows 10 most of Microsoft users will obviously need at least a couple more of the same steps.
